It is a little bit difficult trying to determine the best vacuum cleaner for stairs. But I’m going to try. Selection Criteria.
I want to use some simple criteria to select the type of vacuum cleaner for stairs.
a) It must be lightweight, easy to carry up and down the stairs. For this there are the handheld vacuum cleaners. Also the Upright vacuum cleaners, like the Bissell powerglide, with it’s liftoff technology. The upright should be lightweight though.
b) It should have very good control and not cause obstruction for you while cleaning. Again the handheld and upright wins.

e) I will also consider a vacuum cleaner that I can use standing not squatting. So that I don’t put too much stress on my knees. Anyway most vacuum cleaners have attachments that can be used to extend the length of the nozzle.
